Concept
A project for my second year typography class; which involved choosing a story which has entered the public domain, creating a new typeset for the book that matches the themes or identity of the text;, and printing and binding it into a physical book. I chose "In the Penal Colony" by Franz Kafka, a book about a convict that is taken to an island where criminals are tortured by having their crimes engraved on their skin using an automated machine. The goal of this typeset is to create an experience that mimics the torturous nature of the machine itself by forcing the reader to read in ways that are unfamiliar to them.
